Piggy to Roosters
Mark “Piggy” Riddell is set to return to the NRL in 2011, signing a one year deal with the Sydney Roosters.
It was first reported that he was to be joining Wests Tigers next season, but this year’s Grand Finalists secured the services of Riddell after he left Super League champions Wigan.
Other outlets have been spinning this story, claiming that he was taken from “under the nose of the Wests Tigers.” To the contrary, from what we’ve heard the move was done professionally and there is no bad feeling between Riddell and the Tigers, and he remains good friends with those within the club.
To be fair, it’s probably a better fit for Piggy, anyway. At the Tigers he would only be starting at No. 9 when captain Robbie Farah is on Origin or Test duty or out injured. He might have found himself on the bench, but would likely have spent time playing reserve grade.
At the Roosters, Riddell can act as a mentor for young Hooker Jake Friend, while the chances of him playing as part of the 17 each week are higher, with a second Hooker/Utility player usually part of the make up of Brian Smith’s side. He is also a more than suitable replacement for new recruit Anthony Watts, who injured his knee during pre-season training.
Personally, I can’t wait to see Piggy back in the NRL. Not only is a he decent player and goal kicker, but it’s great to have another character back in the game. If you’ve forgotten some of best work, you’ll find the video below quite entertaining.
