A-League Week 19

And here we are again for another big week in the A-League. After Holger Osieck named the 50-man Asian Cup squad this week, plenty of A-League players will be looking to impress this weekend to secure their spot in the final squad. But on to the games…

Adelaide United vs Melbourne Heart

Matt’s Tip – Adelaide. The Heart put on an improved performance in the derby last week, but still showed signs of fragility in defense, which Adelaide will take full advantage of with their attacking flair.

Adrian’s Tip – Adelaide. There is no way I can see the Heart taking the win in Adelaide, as the home side looks to make ground on the Roar at the top of the ladder.

Wellington Phoenix vs Newcastle Jets

Matt’s Tip – Draw. Newcastle have been in spectacular form, but the trip to the Cake Tin may put a dent in their momentum, whilst the Phoenix are looking to improve at home following a fiery loss  to Gold Coast last week.

Adrian’s Tip – Wellington. I don’t like to back Wellington when they’re playing in Australia, but at home, I always rate them a chance. Danny Vukovic gets his chance this week for the Phoenix after custodian Mark Paston suffered a nasty leg injury in his side’s loss to the Gold Coast, and I’m picking he’ll show why he’s one of the best young keepers Australia has to offer.

Melbourne Victory vs Perth Glory (Podcast Match of the Round)

Matt’s Tip – Victory. Melbourne were extremely impressive against the Heart last week, and with Archie Thompson back and in form, along with Robbie Kruse up front and Carlos Hernandez trailing behind, they should prove too much for a Perth side who couldn’t quite hold on at home last week.

Adrian’s Tip – Victory. Perth, for whatever reason, can’t seem to get results. Whether it’s because of dubious decisions from referees, a lack of communication, poor tactics… I don’t know. But I do know one thing for sure- they wont be winning in Melbourne this weekend.

North Queensland Fury vs Brisbane Roar

Matt’s Tip – Brisbane. A true Queensland derby this week, although don’t expect anything like last week’s Melbourne derby. Brisbane put Sydney to bed last week at a canter, despite the efforts of former Roar striker Alex Brosque in the second half. The Fury are coming off a close win over Sydney mid-week, but their performance against Adelaide last Friday left a lot to be desired.

Adrian’s Tip – Draw. I’ve really liked the improvement that the North Queensland side have shown. So much so, I think they can snatch a draw at home against a Roar side which are setting the bar very high this season.

Gold Coast United vs Central Coast Mariners

Matt’s Tip – Draw. Gold Coast may be missing a couple of key players this week, and a poor mid-week loss to Newcastle shows bad signs for them. At home however, they should grab a point, with the Mariners impressive form continuing with a last grasp draw in Perth enough to keep them in the race for a top two finish.

Adrian’s Tip – Gold Coast. It’s free ticket weekend at Robina- over 15,000 have reportedly been snapped up already, and really, who can blame them? Everyone loves free stuff! Back to the matter at hand though, I think the GC can win again against their fellow Coast.

That’s it for the A-League this week, feel free to let us know what you think in the comments below.
