Piggy to Roosters

December 15, 2010 Leave a comment

Mark “Piggy” Riddell is set to return to the NRL in 2011, signing a one year deal with the Sydney Roosters.

It was first reported that he was to be joining Wests Tigers next season, but this year’s Grand Finalists secured the services of Riddell after he left Super League champions Wigan. Read more…

Australia look for a taste of the local Beer

December 11, 2010 Leave a comment

Australian selectors have thrown another spanner in the works, selecting unheralded West Australian Michael Beer for the Third Test against England. Beer, who moved to Perth this season after battling away in Melbourne Grade Cricket for years, has played only five first-class matches, with a modest record of 16 wickets at 39.93. Along with this, Beer’s much talked about local knowledge could be limited, having played only three matches at the WACA, and it yet to take more than three wickets in an innings.

Despite one selection shock, the remainder to the changes to the side were quite unsurprising, with Phillip Hughes, Steve Smith, Mitchell Johnson and Ben Hilfenhaus called in to replace the injured Simon Katich, and the dropped Xavier Doherty, Marcus North and Doug Bollinger. Read more…

The end of Australian football (soccer)?

December 11, 2010 Leave a comment

Despite glowing reports from many within the Australian football community, there is growing speculation from the ever cynical media that the game in Australia is a lost cause. The ‘humiliation’ that was the World Cup Bid, tagged with the dwindling A-League crowds and now the failure of the Sydney Rovers, even before it started, leaves much to be desired from Australian officials.

With so many people death riding the World Game Down Under, the question has to be asked… is it really dead? Read more…

English Premier League Gameweek 17

We kick off our coverage of the EPL with a fantastic round of matches- let’s get stuck in!

Aston Villa v West Bromwich Albion

Matt’s Tip – Draw. Villa have been under performing heavily this year, evidenced by their loss to Liverpool last time out, but at home they should at least scrape a draw against a surprisingly impressive West Brom side.

Adrian’s Tip – Draw. An interesting clash between a side which is pushing for decent spot on a ladder and another which is fighting to stay as far away from the relegation zone as possible. While you’d think WBA would be certains to win this one, I’m feeling the draw.

Everton v Wigan

Matt’s Tip – Everton. Everton are seemingly cruising through this year, yet sit just outside the relegation zone. This should be a big clash at home against fellow relegation stragglers Wigan, and they need to pick up as many points as possible before January when they will lose form midfielder Tim Cahill. Cahill to score and get them home.

Adrian’s Tip – Everton. Very interesting to note Everton’s position on the ladder- I didn’t think they were doing too badly! Having said that, they should win this comfortably, with the form of Cahill at the moment, who would back against them? Read more…

A-League Week 18

…aaaand welcome to the first of our A-League previews! This week we take a look at Week 18, with our Match of the Round being the 2nd ever Melbourne Derby, as covered in the podcast. These are just our tips… Don’t hate us if we get them wrong!

Adelaide United vs North Queensland Fury

Matt’s Tip – Adelaide. They should be too good at home against a Fury side who struggle away from home, but have been on a good roll of late.

Adrian’s Tip – Adelaide. They might be 7 points behind the Roar, but they’ve got two games in hand. Always good at home, and a strong performance here should put them in good stead for a crack at the #1 spot.

Melbourne Victory vs Melbourne Heart (Podcast Match of the Round)

Matt’s Tip – Victory. The Heart have struggled to score goals in recent weeks, and the mid-week game against Newcastle showed this. An Archie Thompson inspired Victory should get them home in front of a massive derby crowd.

Adrian’s Tip – Victory. A very average performance mid-week from the Heart against a 10-man Newcastle side really doesn’t fill you with much confidence. Couple this with the Victory desperately wanting to get one back on the Heart after they won the first Melbourne Derby, and I’d say your money is safe if you backed the two-time A-League champions.
