The protective culture that’s engulfing Australian sport
Whilst the cricket and football comes to an end for the summer, and the winter sports gear up for a big year ahead, it’s the same old same old from Australian sport. Read more…
ICC World Cup Preview
With the World Cup now just days away, I’ve decided its time to take a closer look at the tournament, and each of the teams. Read more…
Sporting politics gone mad!
In the last week we saw the three players implicated in the Pakistan spot-fixing scandal – captain Salman Butt, Mohammad Asif and Mohammad Amir – finally suspended for their involvement in degrading the integrity of the game. Alas, again politics got in the way of the right decisions being made about this problem, and until cricket can sort this out, progress will not be made.
NRL Expansion – Where to for the future?
The last couple of weeks has seen much written about the bids for an NRL franchise in 2013, and as an interested party, I will go through each bid, and analyse not only its pros and cons, but the realistic likelihood of the new Independent Commission choosing them to join the competition. The new face of TV in 20Eleven
Each year, the 5 free-to-air networks shake up their line ups, pushing new shows in an effort to win the ratings, and this year is no different, but with an added twist. With the uptake of digital TV now at above 70%, the commercial networks are starting to realise the potential of this form, and give it some decent content, but I’ll leave that for Adrian to outline. Another year over, and the cabinet remains empty……
As we look back at 2010, a tumultuous year for some sports, a groundbreaking year for others, but an unfortunate one for Australia. Apart from a few stand out performers, the trophy case is basically empty from 2010 for Australia, and now we have to look back at how and why this is so. So I’ll just take you through each major sport and our apparent failure in each, and look to see if anything will be different in 2011. Read more…
Will we ever get out of this spin cycle?
Just under four years ago a guy from St Kilda retired from international cricket. His name was Shane Keith Warne. Four years and ten attempts later, Australia still haven’t found their next great spinner, and from all indications, the hunt will continue for some time. Read more…
Where to now for football?
I wrote (or ranted) last week about how Australian football is NOT dead. Despite this, it certainly needs a lift, and this week I’m going to suggest a few ideas for both the domestic game and the Socceroos, which will help move the game forward in this country, to reach the heights of the major codes. Just quickly before that though, the naming of Holger Osieck’s preliminary squad for January’s Asian Cup is definitely a step in the right direction. Despite the fact that most of the fringe players named will probably not make the final squad, the fact they are mentioned means that Socceroos officials finally realise the importance of depth, and a squad base, in international football. So, anyway, on to my suggestions, starting with those for the domestic game. All of these ideas will ultimately result (hopefully) in the first suggestion. Read more…
The end of Australian football (soccer)?
Despite glowing reports from many within the Australian football community, there is growing speculation from the ever cynical media that the game in Australia is a lost cause. The ‘humiliation’ that was the World Cup Bid, tagged with the dwindling A-League crowds and now the failure of the Sydney Rovers, even before it started, leaves much to be desired from Australian officials.
With so many people death riding the World Game Down Under, the question has to be asked… is it really dead? Read more…
