Chelsea win Champions League

Chelsea have won their first Champions League title, beating Bayern Munich in dramatic (are these things ever straight forward?) circumstances at the Allianz Arena in Munich.

Goals to Thomas Muller (83′) and Didier Drogba (88′) left the score at 1-1 at the end of regular time.

The German club had the chance to seal the deal in front of their home fans with a penalty in extra time. But Arjen Robben missed the spot kick, meaning the game would eventually head into the dreaded penalty shootout.

Bastian Schweinsteiger missed their final penalty shot, giving Drogba the chance to clinch the title, and he did, handing Chelsea a 4-3 win.

Adrian Considers: Talk about thrilling! I tipped Chelsea, and I was vindicated. It was interesting – both sides were under-strength, yet it was the London club who managed to cover their losses the best. Amazing that Ryan Bertrand got a start. Luiz and Cahill did their job, despite both coming into the match with hamstring troubles. What a season for Cahill – moving from Championship-bound Bolton to Champions League winners Chelsea! What was JT doing coming onto the pitch in the full kit?! Trying to re-write history? I wonder what lies ahead for Drogba? And how about manager Roberto Di Matteo? Who would have thought he would be the man to deliver Chelsea the FA Cup and Champions League trophies?

While it wasn’t the most technically brilliant game you’ll ever see, it was all about the circumstances that made it what it was. A good metaphor for the entire season really.

As a result of their victory, Chelsea automatically qualify for the group stages of the tournament next season.

Spare a thought for Tottenham, who will now play in the Europa League despite finishing fourth in the Premier League. They might find it hard to hold onto their stars now. We’ll see.

Also hard done by are Belgian champions Anderlecht, who will now have to qualify for the Champions League after making way for Chelsea. Tough luck.

Well done Chelsea, finally winning the Champions League with arguably their weakest side of the past few years.

What did you think of the result? Were Chelsea deserving victors? Sound off in the comments below.
